Q.01Which federal states have fully free Kita (nursery)?
Berlin (from age 1), Thuringia (from age 1), Saarland (from age 1) and Rhineland-Palatinate (from age 2) are fully fee-free. Bavaria (final year), Hesse (from age 3), Lower Saxony (from age 3) and Bremen (from age 3) offer partial fee waivers.
Q.02What is the sibling discount for Kita fees?
Many municipalities offer a reduced fee when multiple children attend Kita simultaneously (Geschwistermäßigung). In many states, the second child is completely fee-free. Regulations vary widely by municipality.
Q.03What does Krippe (0–3 years) cost on average?
Krippe (under-3s) is not yet fee-free in most states. Typical fees range from €100 to €500/month depending on income and state. Berlin and Thuringia are free even for under-3s.
Q.04Can I deduct Kita fees for tax purposes in Germany?
Yes — childcare costs can be claimed as a tax deduction (§ 10 para. 1 no. 5 EStG): 2/3 of costs, up to €4,000 per child per year. Meal fees and trips are not deductible.
