Frequently Asked Questions: Pregnancy 2026
Q.01How is the expected due date (EDD) calculated?
The EDD is calculated using Naegele's rule: first day of last menstrual period + 280 days (40 weeks). For irregular cycles, the gynaecological ultrasound EDD may differ. Our calculator uses your entered LMP date or known EDD as the basis.
Q.02When does Mutterschutz (maternity protection) start and end?
Maternity protection begins 6 weeks before the expected due date (§ 3 para. 1 MuSchG) and ends 8 weeks after the birth (§ 3 para. 2 MuSchG). For multiple births or premature births, the protection period extends to 12 weeks after the birth.
Q.03When must I apply for Elterngeld (parental allowance)?
Elterngeld can be applied for retroactively for up to 3 months. There is no absolute deadline other than the end of the Elterngeld period (14 months after birth). Recommendation: apply within the first 3 months after birth.
Q.04When must I apply for Kindergeld (child benefit)?
Kindergeld can be applied for retroactively for a maximum of 6 months. Apply ideally immediately after the birth. The Familienkasse will pay at most from the seventh month before the application date.
Q.05What are U-Untersuchungen (well-child checks)?
U-Untersuchungen are preventive health checks for children (U1–U9, J1). They are not legally mandatory but strongly recommended. Some federal states actively invite parents. They check development, vaccination status, and early disease detection.
Q.06When must I register the birth at the Standesamt (registry office)?
The birth must be registered within one week at the Standesamt of the place of birth (§ 18 PStG). The hospital usually helps with the registration. Required: birth certificate of the child, parents' IDs, marriage certificate if applicable.
