Which deadlines apply after birth?
After the birth of a child, there are several statutory deadlines parents must meet — and some important recommendations that can have significant financial implications:
- Registry office (1 week): The birth must be reported to the Standesamt within one week (§ 18 PStG).
- Health insurer (as soon as possible): Enroll the child in family insurance. Possible retroactively from birth date.
- Elterngeld (max. 3 months retroactive): Application can be made retroactively for max. 3 months before submission (§ 7 BEEG).
- Kindergeld (max. 6 months retroactive): Familienkasse pays Kindergeld max. 6 months retroactively (§ 70 EStG).
- Preventive check-ups: Not legally mandatory, but strongly recommended.
