How we measure

Values come from the official quarterly reports of the Familienkasse (BfA) and BMFSFJ Elterngeld report — full state-level granularity, aggregated over all fully approved first-time applications. Updated quarterly. Tip: online applications with complete documents often reach the Q25 value — read the table as "faster than median" if everything is in order.

FAQ03

Frequent questions on processing times

Q.01How long does it take on average for Kindergeld to be approved?
Nationwide median **34 days** (2026-Q1, BfA Family Fund). Fastest states: Bavaria (28), Saxony (29). Slowest: Berlin (45) and North Rhine-Westphalia (41). A complete online application with all documents typically takes 14-20 days.
Q.02Why does Elterngeld take so much longer than Kindergeld?
Nationwide median **56 days** — nearly double Kindergeld. Reasons: (1) Elterngeldstellen are state-level (no unified IT), (2) complex income verification per § 2c BEEG (last 12 months of payslips), (3) peaks at year-end and during summer.
Q.03Can I speed up processing?
Three effective levers: (1) Online application instead of paper. (2) Complete documents the first time. (3) Status request after 6 weeks in writing.

Note: Values are medians and quartiles from official sources (BfA Q1/2026 quarterly report, BMFSFJ Elterngeld report Q4/2025). Updated quarterly. Individual processing time may vary significantly.
