How does the gross-to-net calculator work?

The calculator derives your net income from your gross salary after deducting income tax (§ 39b EStG), the solidarity surcharge, church tax where applicable and the social insurance contributions (health, pension, unemployment and care insurance).

What makes it unique: we also show which family benefits you might be entitled to at this income — Kindergeld, plus guidance on Elterngeld, Kinderzuschlag and Wohngeld. No other gross-to-net calculator offers this combination.

FAQ05

Frequently Asked Questions about the Gross-to-Net Calculator 2026

Q.01How is income tax calculated in 2026?
Income tax follows the tariff under § 32a EStG, applied via the wage-tax formula § 39b EStG. The 2026 basic allowance is around €12,348. The tariff is progressive: from a 14% entry rate up to 42% (top rate from approx. €69,878) and 45% for very high incomes.
Q.02Which tax class is the right one?
Tax class I applies to singles, II to single parents (with relief amount), III/V or IV/IV to married couples. The III/V combination is worthwhile with a large income gap, IV/IV with similar incomes. The final tax is settled via the tax return — the tax class only affects the monthly prepayment.
Q.03What is deducted from gross salary?
From gross are deducted: income tax, solidarity surcharge (only above the exemption limit), church tax where applicable (8–9%), and the employee share of social insurance: health (approx. 7.3% + supplementary rate), pension (9.3%), unemployment (1.3%) and care insurance (approx. 1.8%, plus a childless surcharge).
Q.04How much net remains from €4,000 gross?
At €4,000 gross/month, tax class I, no church tax and statutory health insurance, about €2,600–2,700 net remains in 2026. In tax class III (married) it is approx. €2,950–3,050. The exact amount depends on federal state, health-insurance supplementary rate and child allowance.
Q.05Does the calculator account for family benefits?
Yes — as the only gross-to-net calculator we also show which family benefits you may be entitled to at the income entered. Kindergeld (€259/child/month) is calculated directly; for Elterngeld, Kinderzuschlag and Wohngeld we link to the respective detailed calculators.
