Elterngeld Payment 2026: When It Is Paid and How It Works

Last updated: May 2026. Once your Elterngeld application has been approved, one question is usually asked immediately: when does the money actually arrive? The answer depends on your Bundesland, the birth date, whether a Mutterschaftsgeld offset applies, and whether you are entitled to a Geschwisterbonus or a Mehrlingszuschlag. This guide explains the mechanics of payment, gives realistic timelines, and covers what to do if the payment is wrong or late.

Elterngeld is paid monthly in arrears after the end of each Elterngeld month (§ 9 para. 1 BEEG). The Elterngeld month is a calendar month. Payment is made to the bank account (IBAN) given in the application.

For the first payment a special rule applies: if the birth was mid-month, the first calendar month of life is split. Most Bundesländer collect the partial first month and the first complete month into a Sammelzahlung (combined payment) -- a larger first payment covering two calendar months.

Typical payment dates by Bundesland (2026)

Bundesland Typical payment date
Bayern 1st to 5th of the month
Baden-Württemberg 1st to 8th of the month
Berlin 5th to 10th of the month
Brandenburg 5th to 10th of the month
Bremen 5th to 10th of the month
Hamburg 1st to 5th of the month
Hessen 5th to 12th of the month
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 5th to 10th of the month
Niedersachsen 3rd to 8th of the month
Nordrhein-Westfalen 3rd to 10th of the month
Rheinland-Pfalz 5th to 10th of the month
Saarland 5th to 12th of the month
Sachsen 1st to 5th of the month
Sachsen-Anhalt 5th to 10th of the month
Schleswig-Holstein 3rd to 8th of the month
Thüringen 1st to 5th of the month

Note: exact dates vary month to month depending on weekends and public holidays.

How the first payment (Sammelzahlung) works

Suppose your child is born on 14 March 2026. Your Elterngeld months are March 2026 to February 2027 (12 months).

  • March 2026 (Elterngeld month 1): from 14 March to 31 March = 18 days
  • April 2026 (Elterngeld month 2): 1 April to 30 April = full month

The Elterngeldstelle typically makes the first payment in late April or early May 2026, combining:

  • Elterngeld for March (18/31 days × monthly amount)
  • Elterngeld for April (full month)

This is the Sammelzahlung. Subsequent payments are regular monthly payments for each completed Elterngeld month.

Interaction with Mutterschaftsgeld -- Differenzelterngeld

During the maternity protection period (6 weeks before the birth to 8 weeks after), Mutterschaftsgeld from the statutory health insurer overlaps with the start of Elterngeld. To avoid double payment, the BEEG uses a deduction rule:

  • The Elterngeldstelle calculates full Elterngeld as normal.
  • It deducts the daily Mutterschaftsgeld × 30 (monthly equivalent).
  • The remaining amount is the Differenzelterngeld -- paid on top of the Mutterschaftsgeld.
  • If Mutterschaftsgeld ≥ full Elterngeld: no Elterngeld is paid for those months, but the months are NOT counted as used Elterngeld months.

Practical implication: if Mutterschaftsgeld covers the full Elterngeld amount, the mother effectively gains extra free Elterngeld months.

Example: Mrs Hoffmann receives Mutterschaftsgeld of €65/calendar day = €1,950/month equivalent. Her Elterngeld would be €1,400/month. Since €1,950 > €1,400, the Elterngeld for both maternity-protection months is €0, but those months are NOT deducted from her 12-month budget. Result: she effectively gets 14 months of Elterngeld instead of 12.

Geschwisterbonus -- higher payment for a second or subsequent child

If an older sibling under 3 years old (or under 6 for multiple births, or under 14 with a disability) lives in the household, the Elterngeld is increased by 10 % -- at least €75/month extra (§ 2a para. 1 BEEG).

Example: Mrs Schneider has a 22-month-old at home. New baby arrives. Normal Elterngeld: €900/month. Geschwisterbonus: 10 % × €900 = €90/month extra -- total €990/month.

Document required: sibling's birth certificate. Mention the sibling explicitly in the application.

Mehrlingszuschlag -- multiple births

For twins, triplets, or higher multiples, the Mehrlingszuschlag adds €300 per additional child on top of the standard Elterngeld (§ 2a para. 4 BEEG). For twins: +€300. For triplets: +€600.

Example: Mrs Yilmaz gives birth to twins. Standard Elterngeld: €1,200/month. Mehrlingszuschlag: +€300. Total: €1,500/month.

Part-time work and Differenzelterngeld for partial return

If you return to work part-time during the Elterngeld period, the income earned reduces the Elterngeld amount:

  • Full Elterngeld (based on pre-birth income) minus what would have been paid if part-time income had been the reference income.
  • Part-time income during the Elterngeld period must be reported every month to the Elterngeldstelle.

Example: Mrs Wagner previously earned €2,500 net. During parental leave she earns €1,000 net part-time. Differenzelterngeld: 67 % × (€2,500 - €1,000) = €1,005/month.

Three case studies on payment timing

Familie Hoffmann -- standard case (NRW)

Birth: 1 April 2026. Application: 15 April 2026. Approved: ~15 May 2026 (6 weeks). First payment (Sammelzahlung for April): late May 2026. Subsequent payments: regularly around the 5th--10th of each month.

Familie Schneider -- Mutterschaftsgeld overlap (Bayern)

Birth: 20 February 2026. Mutterschaftsgeld: 9 January 2026 to 17 April 2026. Mutterschaftsgeld = €54/calendar day = €1,620/month. Elterngeld would be €1,400/month.

  • February and March 2026: Mutterschaftsgeld (€1,620) > Elterngeld (€1,400) -- €0 Elterngeld for these months; months NOT counted.
  • From May 2026: €1,400/month for 12 remaining months.
  • Effective total: 14 standard months.

Familie Yilmaz -- late application (Berlin)

Birth: 10 January 2026. Application: 20 April 2026 (month 3 -- within the 3-month window). Sammelzahlung covers partial January + February + March. Expected: early June 2026.

What to do if the payment is late or wrong

Step 1 -- Check the Bewilligungsbescheid. If the stated amount or period is wrong, file a Widerspruch (formal objection) within one month of the date on the notice.

Step 2 -- Check your bank. Allow 5--10 business days after the expected date before raising a query.

Step 3 -- Contact the Elterngeldstelle. Reference your case number (Aktenzeichen) from the approval notice.

Step 4 -- For systematic errors, request a revised Bewilligungsbescheid and submit documentation. If the objection is rejected, the next step is a complaint to the administrative court (Verwaltungsgericht).

Overpayments: if the Elterngeldstelle has paid too much, you will receive a repayment demand (Rückforderungsbescheid). You have one month to object or request a payment plan. Instalment arrangements are usually granted.

Frequently missed entitlements

  • Geschwisterbonus: always include the sibling's birth date explicitly in the application if you have a child under 3 at home.
  • Mehrlingszuschlag for twins: tick the multiple-birth box and attach both birth certificates.
  • Differenzelterngeld when partially returning to work: notify every month; the Elterngeldstelle adjusts month by month.
  • Bonus months for premature birth (§ 4b BEEG): attach the hospital discharge letter confirming gestational age.

FAQ06

Frequently asked questions

Q.01When does the first Elterngeld payment arrive?
The first Elterngeld payment (Sammelzahlung) typically arrives 4 to 8 weeks after the Elterngeldstelle receives your complete application. Since Elterngeld is paid monthly in arrears, the first payment usually covers the partial birth month plus the first full calendar month of life. For a March birth, you can usually expect the first combined payment in late April or early May.
Q.02What is the Sammelzahlung (combined first payment)?
If a child is born mid-month, the first Elterngeld month starts on the birth date and ends on the last day of that month (a partial month). The Elterngeldstelle typically combines this partial month with the first full calendar month into a single Sammelzahlung -- a larger initial payment. Subsequent regular monthly payments cover one full calendar month each.
Q.03How does Mutterschaftsgeld affect Elterngeld payment?
During the maternity protection period, Mutterschaftsgeld from the statutory health insurer may exceed the Elterngeld amount. Where Mutterschaftsgeld equals or exceeds Elterngeld, only the Differenzelterngeld is paid (which may be €0). Crucially, months where Elterngeld is €0 due to Mutterschaftsgeld coverage are NOT counted as used Elterngeld months, effectively giving you those months back.
Q.04What is the Geschwisterbonus and how much is it?
The Geschwisterbonus under § 2a para. 1 BEEG adds 10 % to the Elterngeld amount -- at least €75/month -- if an older sibling under 3 years old lives in the household at the time of the new birth. The bonus applies automatically once the Elterngeldstelle is informed of the sibling's age. Include the sibling's birth certificate in the application.
Q.05What is the Mehrlingszuschlag for twins?
The Mehrlingszuschlag under § 2a para. 4 BEEG adds €300 per additional child (so €300 for twins, €600 for triplets) on top of the standard Elterngeld amount. Both children's birth certificates must be included in the application.
Q.06What should I do if my Elterngeld is paid incorrectly?
First check the Bewilligungsbescheid -- if the stated amount or period is wrong, file a Widerspruch (formal objection) within one month of the notice date. If a payment simply does not arrive on time, wait 5--10 business days past the expected date before contacting the Elterngeldstelle. For overpayments, you have one month to object or request a repayment plan.
